Grandparents Empowerment Movement (G.E.M.) was established in November 1994, by the late Doris W. Dennard, ACSW, Assistant Director of Harlem Interfaith and Mrs. Ruth Rudder of A. Philip Randolph Senior Citizen Center, to assist grandparents who were suddenly charged with the daily care and responsibility of their grandchildren because of the incapacitation or death of their adult children due to AIDS, drugs or violence.
G.E.M. is comprised of a group of parenting grandparents who reside in the Greater Harlem Community and the surrounding boroughs. These parenting grandparents are committed to improving the quality of life for families headed by parenting grandparents. GEM currently operates under the sponsorship of the Steinway Child and Family Services, Inc.
G.E.M. teaches parenting grandparents to:
- Teach the art of family healing through workshops, seminars, exploration of resources and collaboration with social and political organizations.
- Engage in counseling, training and other learning advocacy activities which enhance skills in family healing, educational advancement of children, family economic independence and well-being and crisis prevention.
- Teach more effective ways of helping the natural parents of GEM grandchildren to become capable of managing their lives more effectively.
