Steinway runs two innovative programs for older people. Located in Central Harlem, both target minority seniors and provide culturally appropriate services. Members of both programs live with high rates of disabilities so Steinway ensures that they get health service and information on wellness.
The Esplanade Gardens Senior Initiative is a NORC-type program offering members a wide variety of educational, cultural and recreational activities. It is linked to Harlem Hospital and other providers. The program makes approximately 8,000 calls a years to members and their families.
The GEM or Grandparents Empowerment Movement is for older adults who have assumed child care responsibilities. GEM members care for grandchildren whose parents have substance abuse or mental illnesses, are incarcerated or who have life-threatening diseases.
Funding for the Esplanade Gardens program are provided by Council Member Inez E. Dickens, 9th, Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the New York City Council, Associated Black Charities and the Manhattan Borough Presidents Office. Funding for GEM is provided by the Yoko Ono Foundation and other donors.
