Children and adolescents account for 65% of all clients. Historically committed to young people, Steinway operates school-based clinics in Queens and Brooklyn. By situating clinics in schools, SCFS knows that youngsters are more likely to be available for treatment. Steinway staff also work with school personnel. In addition to school-based care, Steinway offers a Family Support Program for parents and legal guardians of children and adolescent with serious emotional disturbances. SCFS also runs a residence for children with serious emotional disorders who cannot be treated while living at home.
Queens On-Site School-Based Programming
The On-Site School-Based Program operates in District 30 in Queens, PS 76 and 112 and IS 126 and 204. The four clinics serve young people with emotional disorders. On-Site youngsters and their parents receive individual and family therapy.

Brooklyn On-Site School-Based Programming
The 37th Street Clinic is a school-based program for youngsters with serious emotional disorders. Housed in The Lillian L. Rashkis High School for special education students, the program operates year-round. Services are available on school days and Saturdays. Staff from Steinway and the school develop education and treatment plans for clients who range in age from 13 to 21.

The Community Residence Program
Steinway’s Community Residence is for children who have been hospitalized or require treatment outside of the home. It is SCFS’ most intensive program for children and one of the City’s few coed residences for those aged 5-12. Referrals to the residence come from New York State’s Single Point of Access (SPOA). It is funded by the State.

The Family Support Program
The Family Support Program is for the parents and legal guardians of children aged 6-14 with serious emotional disorders. Its major component is a therapeutic respite care program for parents that is provided both after school and at a summer camp. In a parenting skills program, caregivers learn to better manage their child and to advocate for needed services. The Family Support Program also serves children who are taught skills that make it easier for them to function in the mainstream.
