Harlem Community and the surrounding boroughs. These parenting grandparents are

The Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) is a program
designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors age 60 and above
residing at Esplanade Gardens.
In early 2000, the Board of Directors at Esplanade Gardens recognized
the needs of its elderly population. Under the leadership of Mrs.
Mary Sweeting (then the President of its Board of Directors) a program
tailored to serve the seniors was developed. During this period of
time Esplanade Gardens Golden Heritage Inc. was formed.
Simultaneously, Esplanade Board of Directors and the Board of Golden
Heritage were in discussion with Mr. Nat Yalowitz, President of NORC
Supportive Service Centers to actualize a program that would meet the
needs of seniors at Esplanade Gardens. After much deliberation and
searching for an organization to provide case management,
intergenerational, recreational, medical, health, and entitlement
services, Steinway Child and Family Services was selected. As a
result, the program commenced in August 2002 and celebrated its first
anniversary on August 20, 2003.
The uniqueness of this program lies in the confidence of the Board of
Directors at Esplanade Gardens which felt that the program should be
strictly under its jurisdiction and involvement.
