Lifestyle Changes for a More Relaxed Outlook

Facing life with relaxation in mind will help you manage stress on a day-to-day basis. Here are six basic tips for keeping tension at bay.

  • Avoid Clutter.
  • Accept the things you cannot change.
  • Look for the learning opportunity in every challenge.
  • Simplify your schedule.
  • Take time for yourself each day.
  • Spend time with positive people.
Supplements You Need

Fifty% of women and 25% of men over 50 will break a bone as the result of osteoporosis.  The best way to avoid osteoporosis is to take calcium supplements.  Pre-menopausal women need 1200 mg a day, while post menopausal women (who produce less estrogen) should get 1500mg.  Break up the amounts to 500mg increments as that is all your body can absorb.  You also get calcium via dairy products.

Vitamin D‘s star keeps rising.  It benefits your bones and teeth, and is good for your mood, heart health, and even cancer protection.  You can get it through some types of cheese and fish and exposure to sunlight. However it is hard to get your body to manufacture vitamin D and hard to get enough through food, so taking vitamin D3 (the form your body better absorbs) supplement at least 400-1000 international units per day is optimal.

Omega 3s is a group of acids known to be beneficial to those who suffer from arthritis, depression, anxiety and cardiac arrhythmias.  They are believed to boost immunity and play a role in the prevention of Parkinson’s and heart disease.  If you are planning to have a baby, taking folic acid is a good idea.  Folic prevents neural tube defects (like spina bifida) in the fetus.  If you are a woman in child bearing age with any chance of getting pregnant you should take this supplement daily.  The effectiveness is highest in the first trimester.  You can get folate (naturally occurring form of folic acid) from lentils, legumes, leafy green vegetables, and peanut butter.  Women who might get pregnant need 400-800 mcg of folic acid daily.  Breast feeding mothers need 500mcg daily.

Beat Winter Weight Gain — Eat Drink Be Merry and Stay Healthy

Tis the season of eggnog and hot chocolate, mulled ciderand sparkling wine. ‘Tis also the season (betweenThanksgiving and New Year when Americans put on half of our annual weight gain. It is easy to blame the holiday cookies, but the foods aren’t the real culprits. The 500 calories in a 16 ounce eggnog latte has almost twice the calories of a candy bar. A cup of cocoa is equal to 13 small chocolate candies. Sweetened beverages are key contributors to excessive weight gain and overall obesity.

We often concentrate on what we eat, and overlook what we drink when we count calories. People who eat a handful of nuts tend to eat fewer calories in their next meal (because of the fiber and protein in the nuts). But when people drink the same number of calories, they don’t cut back on what they eat next. An apple is more satisfying with its 5 grams of dietary fiber, than the same number of calories in a glass of apple juice. We don’t compensate for the calories we take in from beverages the same way we do for those from solid foods.

The good news is we don’t eat and drink holiday foods and beverages every day and can work in some treats at this time.

Don’t forget to exercise during the holiday season!
